The Aber Falls, above the village of Abergwyngregyn in the Snowdonia National Park, is a well-known visitor attraction.  Here in the village, known locally as Aber, we receive large numbers of visitors who enjoy the walk up to the Aber Falls and beyond into the Carneddau range.  Although there is parking (currently £5.00 per day) at the entrance to the Coedydd Aber National Nature Reserve where the one-mile-long path the the Aber Falls begins, the road through the village is single track with few passing places.  This means that, during busy periods – weekends and Bank Holidays – you can expect severe congestion with gridlock and significant delays.  To avoid the congestion, we urge visitors to use the free parking below the village and walk up the valley.  This takes you past Tŷ Pwmp, which houses a small exhibition of the history of Aber and the Princes of Gwynedd and a toilet, Caffi Alma at the entrance to the village and Yr Hen Felin (The Old Mill) Community Centre and Café in the centre.

The Anafon Hydro Scheme is a community venture.  The hydroelectric generating plant is not located on the Afon Rhaeadr flowing over the Aber Falls but on a tributary, the Afon Anafon, in an adjacent valley. The water powering the hydroelectric plant is taken out of the river high in the Carneddau and returned downstream once it has passed through our turbine.  The scheme is owned and managed by Ynni Anafon Energy Cyf, a Community Benefit Society set up in 2014 to build and operate the hydro to generate profits to be used for the benefit of local communities.

Our aim was to build and operate a hydro-electric generating plant to:

Environment

Maximise the renewable energy contribution from the site while safe-guarding the local ecology, archaeology and environment;

Energy

Achieve generation of approximately 1 GWh per annum, enough to supply about 230 households and to offset more than 19,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions over the first 40 years of the plant’s life;

Community

Earn significant income to support energy efficiency, infrastructure and social initiatives in Abergwyngregyn and Llanfairfechan.
